I continue to be amazed at the range of behavior of cultivars in
different growing conditions. So far, CELEBRATION SONG is a real weed
in my garden, in a rare class of almost carefree growers, perhaps
thriving on my gravelly soil? Of the others that Francelle lists, ANNA
BELLE BABSON, MARY FRANCES and CITY LIGHTS are very poor growers, LADY
FRIEND is nearly always at death's door from rot following late freeze
damage, & SUPREME SULTAN went to heaven long ago. JESSE'S SONG and
SKATING PARTY do very well here and I haven't notice any rot on either.
I don't grow MOUNTAIN VIOLET or SOUL SISTER, but will definitely check
them out. Of recent cultivars, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN continues to be among
the best growing/most reliable bloomer. Thanks for the post.
<In this hot climate I've had more of my share of rot, particularly last
fall. There is wide variation in the susceptibility to it. Celebration
Song and Supreme Sultan seem to be the worst. I have never had rot in
Jesse's Song, Lady Friend, Skating Party, Mountain Violet, Soul Sister,
Anna Belle Babson, Mary Frances or City Lights. It might be interesting
to create a list of irises that just don't rot.
