Where are you?  Northern Hemisphere?  or Southern Hemisphere?  I'm 
pretty sure the plants are supposed to go dormant during the dry 
winter season.  So maybe what you're seeing is normal.  I've never 
heard of them needing lots of water (not mature plants anyway)... in 
fact I thought they came from semi-arid regions of Mexico and so I 
always gave them good drainage.

Sorry, I wish I could give you more info, but I don't have experience 
raising them from seed.  I have a bunch of bulbs that I grow in 
containers and then bring them indoors during winter because they're 
not hardy up here this far north.
