Re: CULT: starting rz's off in pots in Summer

Hello Everyone,
I was reading everyones comments on their problems of rot and decided I
could contribute a little something too...
I have never had any rot problems until this year, we had a very wet spring
and a few tb's namely Stormbringer, Mountain Violet , Blue for You and
Vanda Song decided that it would be fun to rot after they bloomed, so I
followed all the iris-talk experts advise and hacked out the mushy bits with
a knife and poured diluted White King bleach over the rhizomes. Now they are
fine and are sending up little increases.
On the other side of the coin, Excellency, a few plants of Beverly Sills and
Rapture in Blue decided that they might shrivel up and nearly dried out. So
I have just lifted them, cleaned them up, divided the good bits from the bad
and replanted them deeper with my fingers crossed.
I had no problems, unlike Jan Clark, with my new purchases. I watered them
as I usually do, gave them no shade, probably abused the hell out of the
poor things by frying them a bit, but I did plant them a little deeper than
I normally do. Maybe this was the key to their survival, eitherways, they
are thriving and have all got new shoots. Gaelic Gig has gone wild after I
moved it into full sun and has put up 5 new increases. The most I have ever
had, so I figure that I have done something right. All the dwarves that I
planted last year in pots suffered badly but are now in the ground and have
sent up new leaves, they had large root systems though so I think they were
just a bit stressed, and terribly thirsty.
Now all I have to do is wait and see who surives my new moving treatment. At
least I will know how to treat everything with such expert iris advise,
Thanks everyone.:)
Regards, from Wendy Sargeant, Zone 8-9ish, yes it feels like autumn, weve
had rain, its cooler and the grass is appearing again, not so brown now.

> Last year was the worst year for losses among pots of newly acquired
rhizomes. If I gave them water - they rotted. If I didn't they shrivelled up
and died in the intense heat.
> This year, I decided to use light shade cloth over my pots. I have watered
them only once every 10 days or so, and there have been no losses. All
plants look healthy, and are starting to show new leaves and roots. I think
I got the idea from Sharon McAllister, who described using shade cloth over
Arilbred seedlings. That piece of cheap shadecloth and six star pickets were
a very worth while investment. Once the weather cools, I will remove it.
