Well, this is the situation we all try to avoid, isn't it.  There is nothing that will discourage a newbie more to growing irises than not having any bloom on their first year's planting.  How frustrating!

First and foremost, I would suggest you contact someone in a local iris society to try to determine what you should do for your area.  It would be better to get someone knowledgable out to your garden to have a "looksie".   

Without more details, it is difficult to determine what the problem may have been; culture, rhizome size, or other.  But, hang in there kiddo...you're bound to get bloom eventually!
