Apparently the I. danfordiae in cultivation is a sterile triploid.

For more information on reticulata hybrids and reticulata breeding, check
the AIS Bulletin or SIGNA for articles by Alan McMurtrie of Canada.  He's
been at it for years and has gotten some wonderful results.

Reticulatas do not increase very rapidly even under the best of conditions.
The hybrid 'Katherine Hodgkin'  has been around for decades but is just
now making it into the bulb catalogs.  By the way, this is a delightful,
large-flowered iris of yellow with blue veining.
