Dear Lorraine,
Gophers are rodents and have much different digestive systems than cattle. Cattle have 4 Stomachs and an enzyme that mixes with Iris root to create a poison. Cattle are very stupid and will eat things that will kill them. 50 yard rolls of barb wire, cannonballs, Hip bones off of dead cattle, and any thing else in their path that they can get part of in their mouth. Terry's pet of last year ate 3 car titles, a mirror, 3 rolls of duct tape, 2 lawnmower seats and most of the wiring, uncounted feed sacks, feed, string and. paper. Part of a car seat, a styrofoam box, and Many Many more items we are still not sure how many. He did all this by moving the junk car he was attached to by a 75' log chain and reaching new things. Never mind the car was in park and weighed considerably more that he did. The log chain weighs 300 lbs. I do not know if the roots are poison or not. Just the rhizome. I know the leaves are not poison to bovines. My neighbors always check their fence daily in winter and weekly in warmer months. If there is a problem I call and they are here immediately to fix it. They do not do this for me, They do it to protect their investment and to keep damage they are responsible for to a minimum. Not that I have ever asked for recompense. By keeping on friendly terms and helping when I can I know they will do the same for me. The only gophers around here are the escapees from the zoo. So far they have a small colony on useless land 20 miles from here. The zoo has been unsuccessful in recapturing them. Now that was fun to watch. The annual roundup attempt usually leaves a lot of us laughing. I don't know if they will do it any more as they have enough to reestablish the colony.
Hope you get a chuckle out of "Baby MooMoo's" antics, we did. He weighed 750 lbs. when he went to market I guess car and lawnmower parts didn't bother him. I am still amazed your neighbors don't repair or replace the fence. Around here that is a given. And in the case of car accidents enforced by the court.
Wendy

Animals are usually allot smarter then we give them credit for. The
neighbor cows come over the fence to eat the winter grass that is very
lush right now, they stomp the iris into the dirt but so far haven't
pulled any out. We do our best to keep them on their own side of the
fence most of the time!! So why don't the gophers die in large droves
when they are digging and moving around my iris?? I assume that some of
the iris must get eaten since some just dissapear. I know they eat the
roots, maybe that part isn't poison?? lorraine
