Cattle can't spit out anything that goes in their mouths. This has to do
with the muscles of the tongue. If you keep your cow in a field littered
with junk, she will have a lick of something, and if it goes in, she will
end up swallowing it if it is small enough. This is not stupidity, it is
just the way they are made. Choke is a common problem in cattle, and I can
imagine a large iris rhizome might kill a cow if it lodged in the back of
the throat.
Terry's pet of last year ate 3 car titles, a mirror, 3 rolls of duct tape, 2
lawnmower seats and most of the wiring, uncounted feed sacks, feed, string
and. paper. Part of a car seat, a styrofoam box, and Many Many more items we
are still not sure how many.
Perhaps a good clean up before you get another pet cow, might be the humane
way to go?

All this hardware generally stays in the rumen (first stomach) and may not
do any harm, but can cause the animal to slowly die of starvation.
Vet's are human too, and can make mistakes, but it is possible that you
either misunderstood the diagnosis, or that another plant or substance was
the cause of the demise of the animal. A cow eats a lot in a day.
