Cattle have 4 Stomachs and an enzyme that mixes with Iris root to create a
poison. Cattle are very stupid and will eat things that will kill them.
We have a couple of cattle who have access to our iris compost pile,
rhizomes and all. Though they don't clean up every rhizome, I'm sure
they've helped themselves to quite a few, with no ill affects. We did
have a cow eat aged mulberry leaves and throw up after that, although horses
ate fresh mulberry leaves with no problem. Worse thing I've seen with
cows or horses is eating oleander leaves... just a few of them can be
lethal. We lost a pony once to oleander. No longer do I grow
oleander's any more. They've been removed from my gardens. They're pretty
along the freeways, and they're very draught tollerant in that
environment... I'll enjoy them from a distance but not at home.
