Hi, Jan, both leaves and rhizomes are supposed to be mildly poisonous. They would act as a laxitive. At our mountain cabin, I have seen both cattle and deer devour the leaves, and javalina, a pig-like creature root out the rhizomes. I have hoped they would lose their taste for irises, but they always come back for more.
Francelle Edwards Glendale, AZ where stalks appeared today on Noreen's Delight.
I'm curious to know where the first poster got the idea from, that rhizomes
are lethal. I remember a posting some time back, listing the various herbal
remedies, involving irises ingested, or applied.
Can't have been too deadly if people were swallowing the stuff as a cure.
If you search the Mallorn archives, for 'Pliny' you will find some
interesting 'home remedies' that I would not be keen to try myself :-)
Cheers, Jan
