OT-CHAT: Iris Sap; Cows-iris
I don't usually step in on a particular thread, but I am concerned that
some people may believe some of this and someone searching the archives
in the future may feel that because is was on iris-talk it has some credibility.
To my knowledge there is no reputable source that has ever concluded
that in general any part of an iris is poisoneous.
Most of what we are hearing is called "anecdotal" evidence. That is to
say it has never been evaluated under good controlled circumstances. You
could easily say that everyone that has cancer has eaten carrots,
therefore carrots cause cancer. Yet, there is no scientific evidence to
suport that.
Urban legends, "somebody I know heard that..." etc are no reason to even
remotely accept something as fact.
Maybe some lady did hold a stalk in her mouth and suffer some reaction.
It probably had nothing to do with the iris itself. It could have been a
gazillion other things.
Even the Vet that suspected the stomach contents could not be sure that
iris were the only thing in the stomach.
This is not to say that some people are not allergic to some part of a
iris, just like some are allergic to peanuts, shrimp etc. People are,
but that is not a reason to claim irises are toxic. There may a
particular iris species that has some limited toxicity.
Without disrespect to anyone who has posted on this, enough of this
nonsense thread.
If someone knows of a reputable source that has done a thorough
investigation, please let us know and I will apologize vociferously,
groveling and eating many slices of humble pie.
BTW has anyone had all their irises turn white recently? Perhaps purple?
