I don't know about spurias for farther south than Kentucky, but I can tell you that when Mark Cook was still living in that state he sent me 2 pieces of ILA CRAWFORD, which both took root and  bloomed the very next summer and every one since.  It didn't send up new shoots after I planted it, but next spring they were there.  It has also continued to increase every year since then.  Since the conditions are much different in northwest Iowa from Lexington, Ky, I would think this is a spuria that is adaptable to a variety of conditions.  It would be worth trying farther south, too.
