There are products you can safely spray on iris beds to control grasses. One goes by the name of Ornamec, or at least it did a few years ago. A friend, Larry Harder, used it on some beds that were as full of grass as they were of iris. It didn't act instantly, took about 6 weeks before the grass was dead, but the iris never missed a beat, then or later. The same product, or at least products with the same chemical compounds, is sold under other names as well. One is commonly used in farm fields, goes by the name of Fusillade, also just for grasses. These won't touch broadleaf weeds. For broadleaf weeds in my own iris beds I use Roundup but I never, never spray. I dip a foam brush in the solution, then carefully brush it on the leaves of the weeds without touching the iris. It works just fine that way, and this does not leave any residue in the soil, just affects the weeds. Farmers around here deal with weeds in their soybean fields in a similar, though larger scale, way.
