CULT:Season begins!

The iris season started with a triple play here in central Virginia
yesterday (Feb. 27th). A quick walk round the garden in early
morning showed up a surprise bloom on I. unguicularis cretica, with
many more apparently to come. Then, when I returned home in the
evening, I found blooms on I. reticulata and the hybrid 'Katherine
Hodgkin.' The latter is absolutely stunning. The bud appeared above
ground just 2 days before blooming. The large flower is about 1.5x
the size of reticulata and is blooming entirely without foliage, just
an inch or two tall. The color is a sort of pale lemony cream on the
falls, with dots of dark blue and veins of a lighter blue. The
standards are light blue veined darker.
