I will never forget my 1st iris for a couple reasons! I was just about 5
years old! I will never forget, first ,because when I went outside to play
in the lovely weather , there just the heighth to catch my eye was a most
lovely flower!
I went straight to it and picked it ! Like most toddlers, I just snapped off
the head! second, because when I Ran into the house to give it to the person
I loved best, she Cried Real Tears! I remember her getting on the phone,
back then you had to tell the opperator the number you wanted...She had
called Aunt Rena, her sister. She said "You know that flower you were coming
to see, well Donna tore it up! Yes , she pulled the top out of it and
brought it to me. It is too short to put in water and broken too. No, I
didn't spank her, but I feel like it!" Well, that was enough. Almost
enough....The next time I went out that same week, there were more beautiful
purple and guess what some yellow ones too! Well, I went straight to them
and Oh, no, I didn't break it , I carefully moved my little fingers down the
stem (so moma could put them in water) and broke every blossom off and ran
inside with my gifts! It was worse than the 1st time! I did get a spanking
and a scolding that I have never forgotten! "Some flowers are best left in
the garden. And only the gardener should pick those that should come into
the house for a vase." I never picked another flower of anykind again. Well,
only when grandaddy was with me and told me which ones. I would smell them
and count them and run and tell, but thats was it. Now, I am the gardener
and I can pick what I like and leave what I like and I take after my mom, I
really llike to see a lot of them stay in the garden!!! Amazing, huh?
Iris,Rose,Daffodills are the only things I remember grandaddy growing
besides tomatoes, beans, cukes and squash. He liked to garden tho, and then
so did Dad, he expanded to daylilies, azaleas, and violets! We won't even
begin to name what all is in my garden!! Thanks for the fond memories, Bill,
Oh and I still have a year before I turn 60!
