Re: HIST: First Iris

Dear "First Iris" emailers -- I'm not sure, was it Bill or Mike who quoted
"Francesca R. Thoolen" I top her by a few years (92+) which is not too
important now, and I have not checked on when the transcontinental railroad
was finished, butI know trains were in everyday use in the East because my
parents left N.C. on the train to N.Y. State on their honeymoon in 1905 which
was 4 yrs. before I was born. AND I was in College and saw Lindbergh from my
dorm window when his caravan went up Charles St; in Baltimore, after his
famous flight. My grandfathers were young children during the Civil (one
from the SOuth, the other from the North) and I learned very little from
them about the War, tho something was said that the Northern Grandfather was
an underage drummer boy in the War for a short time. Maybe the subject was
taboo because my parents came from opposite sides. My FIRST IRIS! Mother
was the gardener, a very small suburban back yard 25x25 with VERY wide
borders on 3 sides to accommodate her roses, cosmos, columbines,
nasturtiums, marigolds, pansies.alysseum(sp?)etc., AND purple irises. She
belonged to a garden club whcih exchanged plants. One day she came home SO
pleased, because she had exchanged for a YELLOW iris! This was treated as a
rare specimen! I have tried to figure out just what this iris could be, I
was probably 9 or 10 years old - old enough to be impressed with her
pleasure. I only wish she could see my garden now and the pink and black
irises and REBLOOMERS. Maybe some day my grandchildren will have a really
RED iris, not these brickred ones! More than a 'nuff said! Rosalie nr
Baltimore zone 7 where I think we may at last be getting winter! At least
the groundhogs say so - the poor robins, I saw 2 yesterday, and my snowdrops
are all over the front yard, and my Ericas are in full bloom! Oh, my!
