RE:History first iris

These stories are delightful!!! I'm not sure at what age I saw my first
iris, but I have a photo taken of me when I was about 4 years old in my
Grandmother's iris garden. My Mom always told me how she ( my Grandmother)
saved her egg money to buy new iris. This was during the depression and for
reasons unknown, my Grandfather never objected !!

My family moved to KS in the late 1940's and of course Mom brought iris with
her. As luck would have it, my Grandfather here in KS was a gardener also.
All of us kids helped in the veggie garden if we wanted to eat !! But no one
was allowed to help with the flowers--they were his !! As I grew up and
moved around I always planted iris. Thought I had about 1 of every color
until my sister discovered the iris club. I did not know iris had "names"
until joining the iris club here in 1988. I guess the rest of the story is
history, I now grow several hundred varieties, including some of the same
unknown iris from my Grandmother's Kansas City garden and my Grandfather's
Hutchinson garden.
The "iris virus" has now passed down to my children and grandchildren as
they now plant iris whever they are living. My favorite iris continues to
be an unknown very dark purple median height iris. It is among the first to
bloom and is one of the most vigorous plants I have ever grown. Someday I
hope to learn it's name.
