The book is not oversized, is about 350 pages long, and has few color
plates. It was published by Cambridge University Press as an academic book
(with relatively few copies), and this is the usual price for such a book in
the sciences.
Has the BIS gone with a commercial publisher, the book would have been
cheaper and more attractively produced. However, they would have faced some
problems with the long, technical descriptions given of each species. It is
unlikely a commercial publisher would have been interested in that stuff.
Don't be misled--this is a wonderful book and a great reference for the
advanced irisarian, but unless you have a deep interest in the
technicalities and intricacies of the species, it's not for you. Also, it
does not contain a great deal of information on horticulture (this is
spotty; some chapters do have such details, but others do not have anything,
and the chapter on the subject is too brief [4 pages!] and general to be of
much use). I would recommend to about 90% of the iris folk I know to get a
copy of Mathew instead.
