Dear Marsha,
Glasgow is by no means an "updated version of Brian's book." Brian Mathew
did his own second edition, which is the currently available title. This
slender volume was originally published in New Zealand, some time after
Karen Glasgow's death (she was in the midst of preparing it for publication
when she died). Timber Press picked it up, as they so often do with British
gardening books as well. It's not a good buy for American readers unless
you want to have a complete collection of iris books. There are some nice
color pictures, but the cultural advice is unique in lacking any information
at all on pests. There are no iris pests or diseases native to New Zealand,
and by strict quarentine and mostly allowing only seeds to enter the
country, they have kept out leaf spot, the borer, etc. I can't imagine they
don't have rhizome rot, but it is never mentioned in the book.
Your very best buy in iris books is THE WORLD OF IRISES from AIS. Go to the
AIS website and check it out. It is the "encyclopedia of irises" you are
searching for. It's a bit old now, but it contains information you cannot
get anywhere else. Every person serious about irises needs this book!
