If this project ever gets completed, then whoever is in charge should just
run a spell check of the entire database (or whatever it is). This would
pull up virtually all odd spellings and allow the data master to globally
correct spellings for consistency. It would also allow for the odd-meant
spellings to be retained. Perhaps this is too simple.

<Linda, when you say 'fix obvious errors,' does that include
misspellings in names
like FRONTIER MARSHALL, FIREY FURNACE, and CROME
DOME? Other
misspelled names, I cannot think of now, probably
some more ' fireys.' Some of
the misspellings have been around for so long
now, it doesn't seem right to change
them. Walter Moores Enid Lake, MS USA 7/8>
No, definitely not. Sometimes, people spell things oddly by choice &
who's to know whether an extra or missing or different or rearranged
letter here & there in a registered name is intentional or not.
On very rare occasions, there were parentages with an obvious typo. For
example, if something was listed as having parents (Whoel Cloth X May
Hall), I would first check to make sure there wasn't really an iris
called <Whoel Cloth>, then correct the spelling to <Whole Cloth>. Seems
like I remember a few of those. Plus an occasional <ot> instead of
<to>. And now and then a simple 2 parent cross with a lower case x
instead of a capital X. Trivial things.
But there were some other things that I changed that John may have
changed back after I confessed - the one I remember is the spelling of
<Wisteria> in describing color. Some registrations were spelled
<Wistaria> or something odd. I changed them all to be spelled the same
way (Wisteria), for consistency.
I did not change spellings of registered names, except, as in the
addition of intro information in later checklists, John Jones or Mike
Lowe sent corrected spellings from later checklists. I don't know how
John is handling those in the 'virtual' checklist - probably will be
linked with both spellings in the database.
So, some creative editing, but not much. No grammar police <g>
