Some of the oldest plantings of reticulata (or similar itty bitty early
ones) here are still trucking along. The earliest to bloom this year
was 'WalMart mid blue', same as the recently purchased forced ones in
pots on my window sill, but bought in bags in the fall several years ago
& planted in raised beds of garden soil with the rocks sieved out and
much coarse creek sand added. It is also the biggest clump - nearly a
dozen blooms this year. Just starting is the deep reddish purple larger
flowered one (seems like Bill or someone identified this as a different
species last spring). The clump that is starting to open now has maybe
a half dozen stalks or less. No sign of danfordiae, as 'talkers'
predicted.
