Walter,
I've never lost even one iris seedling to dampening off. I've always started
my seed outdoors and connected dampening off with indoor seedlings. I've had
so much trouble with it indoors (combined with low sunshine availability)
that I've given up trying to start tomatoes indoors.
Now watch me lose lots of seedlings to it THIS year . . .what you don't know
can't hurt you? ;-}
