Re:Pipe Dream

When I first became active in our local Iris Society--the PVC pipe was being
used for vases--rather than trying to plug the end of the pipe, a 'cap' was
glued on--and the holes in the wooden bases were made the size to fit the
caps--
In a few years, we needed more vases--so had a work party and made many new
vases--and then discovered that the 'caps' were not all the same size!!!
Some holes were too large, some too small--the larger ones could be fixed
easily--use a little piece of paper and slip it under the cap--stems can
easily be wedged--using pieces of stem--or folded leaves--just as long as
the wedging material does not show above the lip of the pipe--
When I went to the shows in Portland--they were using the same as our
club--but had smaller ones for the smaller flowers--
When I went to the 'HIPS HAPPENING' last year, they had the PVC pipe with
the ends plugged--and had painted the pipe black--about a week before the
show--the vases all looked good--but on some there was more paint than on
others--and it had run down and the base had too much paint on it to go into
the hole in the wood--and they used pieces of foam--in several colors--for
wedging the stems--
Eventually, the PVC pipe starts to yellow with age--then you just call a
work session and scrub them all clean again--or paint them all the same
color--
At our shows, we always have some members who come really early, get their
blooms entered, then stay in the staging area to help whoever is coming in
later--by putting the pipe and wood block together, and putting water in
the pipe--so that the 'vases' are ready for anyone to use.
Also, a couple years ago, our cardboard boxes were starting to fall
apart--mostly from having water from the vases in them, so our club
purchased some nice size plastic 'tubs'--available at Wal-Mart, Target,
Shopko, etc-- and we use them for the storage of the pipes and wood
blocks--We even color coded them--blue for shows, different color for
sale--all the same size and shape--and easier to store than multi-sized boxe
s.
At our Fair (I am Superintendent) we provide all the bottles for cut
flowers--and every year bottles are dropped on the floor and we have the
problem of pieces of glass being on the floor--granted--the display looks
great with all matching bottles--but the combination of cement floors and
glass bottles is not too good--
Carryl in western Montana zone 3/4--where I have 2 crocus (croci ?) in
bloom--
