Re: SPEC: I. japonica

I. japonica variegata has never bloomed for me in about 10 years of culture
outdoors and in pots. Regular japonica blooms well under pot culture, but
only outdoors after a very mild winter--like this one. If we don't get too
cold the next few nights, this would be a good bet for outdoor bloom. Tom,
I'm willing to bet that foliage will be damaged at 17F and any bloomstalks,
even deep in the fans, will be killed.

The variegated variety readily mutates back to the all-green type and very
little variegated material remains in my garden (because of the lower amount
of chlorophyll, the variegated plants are less vigorous and only about half
the size of the all-green ones). In pots, I have to keep cutting out
all-green fans to maintain it.

My potted plants, though kept in a greenhouse that maintains a minimum of
60% humidity, always develop unsightly tip burn.
