Yup! Lots of damage showing when I got home after work yesterday p.m.
After about 10 hours below freezing reaching a low of 15 F, all that new,
lush growth is flopped over, clearly with severe damage. Can't tell how far
down in the fans the damage reaches on most, but some new increase fans seem
to have been taken down to ground level. May be moot anyway. Currently
they are predicting two consecutive nights of temps down to 12 F. That
should finish off what was left if it proves correct. Since they predicted
a low of 10 F before, I was counting myself lucky to keep the 5 degrees 'til
they put the latest in the forecast. Too bad, but unfortunately pretty
normal here.

Otherwise, we've had a mild winter. A lot of the irises have grown
throughout with the last several weeks being the turning point at which they
begin to put on spring growth rapidly. Day temps in the upper 60s and low
to mid 70s started pushing it along rapidly, so many were primed for big
damage. I had one seedling from last spring put up a bloom stalk in
December. Talk about rushing things! That stalk was gone well before this
last spell, of course. That seedling is now called 'the idiot seedling'
here. You psyche yourself up to wait two years to see the first bloom, then
it makes the attempt at eight months. That probably guarantees the two year
time frame. It has lots of increase and has strong growth habits so far, so
I guess I'll find out. But if it is genetically programmed to bloom in
December, it needs to move to Bermuda or somewhere besides here :).
