I find myself smilin' more each time someone parrots conventional wisdom concerning using photos in the identification process. Until inexpensive DNA profiles/comparisom test for each Cultivar can be cataloged and made available, there exists no better place to start an identity search.

I don't think anyone ever suggested that pictures are not a good place to start.

I also think that "parrotted conventional wisdom" takes on additional significance in light of the advances in digital technology for photography and printing. Unless we understand the limitations of the digital processes, and some of the pitfalls therein, we may not know the risks to possibly making incorrect decisions and misnaming irises.

I simply think it is in the interests of all to do what we can to make sure that we don't distribute incorrectly named irises.
