Thanks for the 'Ditto' suggestion Gerry. I like the little ones with the
contrasting signals or eyelashes on the falls. I think I had Ditto once
(the name is extremely familiar), but I lost all my (few) dwarfs during my
moving and abusing period, and I never was really certain what I had.
I'm not sure if it was Ditto (I think probably not), but I had a similar
one for a number of years that produced 100% four-parted flowers. I
thought it was the coolest thing. I've been told by a few people that this
is a "fault", but to me it is great. Used to be a joke that since the
plants I studied were all dicots, the Iris in my yard were evolving into
dicots! Ken Walker has a photo of the same exact plant on his web site
under the name 'Eye Bright'
I remember buying plants of 'Eye Bright' at a local plant sale years ago
(probably about 1982 or '83). I think I still have the receitpt, but I
never had anything that fit the discription bloom in my garden (never had
any yellow dwarfs back then at all!). So, I think my 4-merous bloomer may
have come under the name of 'Eye Bright' just as Ken's apparently did.
I've never been able to get a proper idea as to whether the color of Ditto
matches the plant I had, but in some photos it is close; in others it looks
quite different. I had one plant that was prehaps slightly more yellowish
tinged and with the dark on the falls a bit redder, and I always called
that one 'Ditto'. However, I used to commit the sin of never labelling my
plants - didn't really matter much to me back then, as long as the plants
did well and were pretty, I was happy.
Ken's photo is exactly the same as the one I had (I have photos somewhere).
Sure would love to get the real name and purchase this one again. It was a
very vigorous plant too (till I quite taking care of it), and in the old
yard in Albuquerque it nearly always flowered in February (about now).
