Re: CAT: Buyer beware

Lately I've been getting some of those slick thin paper catalogs that all
have the same plants in them and are obviously printed by the same printer
and mailed from the same clearing house (i.e. Richard Owens Nursery, Kelly
Nurseries, Inter-state Nurseries, etc.). Can't remember if Dutch Gardens
was one of them. I obviously got onto a mailing list. Anyway, these all
seem to have some misidentified plant photos, and it makes me wonder about
the accuracy of what they sell too. Seems like I also recently saw a
blatant Iris mistake in these, but don't remember what it was. It might be
the same mistake you found Christy???

I have seen the name "Dalmatian Iris" used as a generic catch-all for all
I. pallida before, don't remember where, maybe in something like Index
Kewensis???

I think these nurseries often use the same stock photos, and just grab the
one that has the right name attached, without knowing if the photo is truly
correct. I suspect that if you order, you're more likely to get the plant
named in the description than the plant illustrated. There seems to be a
lot of brokered I. pallida 'Aurea-variegata' out there right now.
