measuring bloom size

I am curious as to how others measure the size of the iris blooms. This
information is valuable in several classes.
We found this folding ruler at a hardware store and have been using it
to find the bloom size on our smaller iris.
Does anyone have a different suggestion.
How do you measure your bloom size?
