Yes, injury and stress make it easier for rot. But you have asked the tricky
question.
Our commercial rows are planted a bit densely, and they are good old heavy
Ohio clay.
We have had rain so badly in the spring (up to 9 inches in one May with
another 8 in June)
that the rows were literally submerged by 1/2" of water for extended
periods.
Some rotted, some didn't. We lost rows of a single variety, while the rows
on either side
(different cvs) were untouched. That same variety, planted 25 feet away was
untouched.
The better drained your soil, the less risk. Clay is ok, well amended clay
is even better.
Note that most of our stock is transplanted each year, making it easier for
stress and
frost heave to affect the plants. Established clumps rarely heave or get rot
in our garden.
To sum it up, rot can be highly unpredictable. The best thing is to be
prepared to
diagnose ant treat affected plants.

or stressed, they are vulnerable to rot (erwinia c.). If my garden receives
a lot of rain, say in the spring, will the fact that my soil is mostly clay
(despite my amendments) cause stress for my irises, thus making them
vulnerable to soft rot?

sandy soil, and promised to do the same for clay. I'm looking forward to
this, and just want to give you a gentle reminder, in case it's slipped your
mind! ;)
