I haven't used the flour method for controlling grasshoppers, but the chicken method was the best control I've ever used. I let about ten hens free range outside of the garden that was fenced to keep the rabbits out. In the drought year of about 1988 in Minnesota when the grasshoppers were especially bad, I didn't have any. If you can't let the hens free range, then you can use a double fence - one around the garden or iris bed to keep the chickens out and one four feet beyond that to keep the chickens in. This double fence also helps to keep the deer out since they can't jump over the first fence and have enough room (4 feet) to pose for a jump over the second fence. The fences should be 4-6 feet high.
