Maybe what we need is a photo-illustrated book or booklet on "Success with
Irises in the Swale of Despond" and have the first chapter as "solution
one--grow Siberians!"
Then follow up with repeat or summer bloomers that can take the heat, plus
SDB's and MDB's,
and then, "If you MUST grow tender, beautiful TB's, here's some things you
might do", number one--move to California, Oregon or southwestern Washington
or Idaho.
Number two--grow diploids and historic tetraploids produced in the Swale and
Nebraska.
I could go on and on. How about a chapter on "What not to do." Such as--buy
new, expensive but fabulous irises from the west coast unless you have money
to burn? Or--find a place with morning sun, afternoon shade, eastern
exposure and slope of at least ten degrees, a hundred feet or more above the
creek--with nothing that impedes air drainage out, but plenty that prevents
cold air blasting in from the NW and N? Plus having orchard heating equipment
and tobacco tools such as that cloth you buy. Oh yes, and also an 15-year old
willing to work for irises?
Linda, since you are the one who has tried everything, you know what works,
what doesn't. Want a winter project?
