Hello Everyone, I am new to the list and sort of new to irises. I saw my first irises as a child. My grandmother had 2 varieties in her garden, a purple tall bearded and a yellow tall bearded. I've admired irises ever since. I only have a couple of varieties at present, two that I don't know what they are as they were here when I moved here. One was planted over 50 years ago by the old owner who passed away many years ago and is a short yellow that is about the size of a blue flag and appears to be a bearded of some sort and one that was planted shortly before I moved here and is a bicolor of purple and yellow. The other ones are Night Ruler, Celebration Song and a few that I just purchased last fall and don't remember the names of off hand. I am an artist by trade, and live in one of the northernmost parts of Minnesota in I believe it is zone 3. Night Ruler does amazingly well here by the way. It was my first "fancy" purchase and I have been enjoying it for about 3 years now. I've been breeding rabbits for over 15 years, and wanted to perhaps try my hand at breeding irises...although, I am unsure if I will be able to withstand the long 2 year period before seeing results with irises after getting babies in 30 days for so many years. LOL. I am immensely interested in genetics...have been since college, but the idea of irises being tetraploid has been a little bit daunting. Rabbit genetics are simple in comparison and I almost gave up before I started, but I love the flowers, and would like to try my hand at it anyway. My interests are in rebloomers...that would rebloom even here...and I also like plicatas, bicolors, Oh, who am I kidding...I like them all. LOL. I am interested in learning more about the genetics of irises. Can anyone recommend a book, or send me a ladder of dominance if one is known? I have found very little if anything online regarding this and have no idea where to start. Am I being too brash in asking for something that people have spent years trying to figure out? If so, I apologize. If not, thanks in advance for your help. :) Nice to meet you all.
