Welcome Cindy,

These iris nuts actually love to answer questions, so the very first thing is stop being concerned that you're too brash. The short answer to your genetics questions is go to the iris talk archives at http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-talk. ( I may have bungled the link but if I did just let us know and someone will fix it for me.) Do a search for Neil Morgen... oh I can never remember the last part of his name... and someone put it up just for me the last time.. Anyway, that's enough to get you started in the search engine. Neil was always in on the good genetics discussions when he was still with us.

Something you mentioned in your post is a new term for me; "ladder of dominance" would you explain that a little. Feel free to refer to how it works in rabbits. If I had to guess, it sounds like how some iris breeders refer to Broken Color as a recessive of Plicata which is a recessive of... hmmm, I don't know.

I'm relatively new too, just one or two crops of seedlings under my belt.

Christian

Subject: [iris] new to the list

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the list and sort of new to irises. I saw my first irises as a
child. My grandmother had 2 varieties in her garden, a purple tall bearded
and a yellow tall bearded. I've admired irises ever since. I only have a
couple of varieties at present, two that I don't know what they are as they
were here when I moved here. One was planted over 50 years ago by the old
owner who passed away many years ago and is a short yellow that is about the
size of a blue flag and appears to be a bearded of some sort and one that was
planted shortly before I moved here and is a bicolor of purple and yellow.
The other ones are Night Ruler, Celebration Song and a few that I just
purchased last fall and don't remember the names of off hand.

I am an artist by trade, and live in one of the northernmost parts of
Minnesota in I believe it is zone 3. Night Ruler does amazingly well here by
the way. It was my first "fancy" purchase and I have been enjoying it for
about 3 years now.

I've been breeding rabbits for over 15 years, and wanted to perhaps try my
hand at breeding irises...although, I am unsure if I will be able to withstand
the long 2 year period before seeing results with irises after getting babies
in 30 days for so many years. LOL. I am immensely interested in
genetics...have been since college, but the idea of irises being tetraploid
has been a little bit daunting. Rabbit genetics are simple in comparison and
I almost gave up before I started, but I love the flowers, and would like to
try my hand at it anyway.

My interests are in rebloomers...that would rebloom even here...and I also
like plicatas, bicolors, Oh, who am I kidding...I like them all. LOL.

I am interested in learning more about the genetics of irises. Can anyone
recommend a book, or send me a ladder of dominance if one is known? I have
found very little if anything online regarding this and have no idea where to
start. Am I being too brash in asking for something that people have spent
years trying to figure out? If so, I apologize. If not, thanks in advance
for your help. :) Nice to meet you all. Cindy
