This looks pretty good - Methods of Plant Breeding by HERBERT KENDALL HAYES. Not sure of the date of pub, but the whole thing is available online, also downloadable to Kindle (which I don't have)
page 52 describes various types of inbreeding, including single and double backcrosses. I think it's suggesting using line breeding after the backcross.

Convergent improvement!! That's my breeding program ;-) Always nice to have a label.
