Hello all,
I was sifting thru slides, working on a new program and something that has
niggled at me for a long time finally surfaced.
I don't own a good garden iris that is also a good ORANGE. Oh, a gold here
and there, that's also a decent garden iris. But, the beautiful, rich,
deep, luminous ORANGE -- that just isn't there.
We keep trying Ghio's oranges in fond hope that a rot resistant, well
mannered, good growing orange will be found -- but it hasn't yet happened.
'Malaguena' and 'Montevideo' sulk or rot as do most in this color class.
'Hindenburg' by Bill Maryott is our main orange, we also grow his
'Oktoberfest' but have been less than thrilled by their performance. I will
admit that when I am asked for a slide of an orange, 'Oktoberfest' is
always my choice even though it is now coming up on ten years old.
We usually do well with most of Ben Hager's intros however, 'Cinderella's
Coach' has proved to be an exception to the usual good-garden-iris Ben puts
on the market. Rick Ernst's 'Ambor Tambour' wowed me in Portland but has
not been impressive in our garden thus far.
So, back to the subject -- does anyone know and grow a true ORANGE that is
also a good garden iris?
Best regards,
Mike Lowe
