Re: John Packard's Introduction

|Hi everyone,

Welcome, John!

|As far as Irises are concerned, I have about ten plants last year, mostly
|bearded Irises. I hope they all come back this year for we were very dry
|last summer and extremely cold this winter. The last three mornings we were
|at 0 or -1 F.

I bet they'll be just fine. That's about the temperature range here. I
once lost a very few newly planted ones over the winter, but more because
of the wet than the cold, I think.

|I am looking for a beared iris that is yellow(ish) with a brown lower part
|(beard?). If anyone knows its name and a mail order house I would
|appreciate the info.

The lower _petals_ are called falls; the beard is the small fuzzy patch
on the fall as it goes into the center of the flower. There are actually
quite a few irises with yellow standards and brownish falls--this is
called the variegata color pattern. Schreiner's and Cooley's catalogs
have great color pictures of everything they sell. I'm sure that if
you look through the catalogs you can find one quite similar to what
you're looking for, even if not the identical variety.
