John, if you see the yellow/brown iris in yards, back alleys and beside
roadways, it has a good probability of being one of two old varieties.
Considering your area, it is very likely 'Honorabile (L=E9mon 1840). It coul=
d
also be I. variegata itself, or one of innumerable look-alikes put on the
market by W.J. Fryer.
I believe the Iris Pond catalogs 'Honorabile', if not, 'Argyle Acres'
certainly does.
addresses as follows:
The Iris Pond Argyle Acres
7311 Churchill Dr. 910 Pioneer Circle
McLean, VA 22101 Argyle, TX 76226
If their is sufficient interest, I should probably upload the catalog
source list from ROOTS, Journal of the Historic Iris Society. These sources
can be invaluable when you are looking for an iris that has fallen out of
the 'up-to-the-minute' class. (Many times their prices are much better than
the 'bigies' on the new things also.)
Best regards,
Mike Lowe
