Re: Pat's Intro--Iris Newbie

|I need to

Welcome, Pat--you've come to the right place!

|I am in southern California, the Los Angeles area. I noticed
|some of you are putting in zone numbers, where do you look that up?
|
Most garden catalogs have a map showing the zones. I believe LA is
zone 9, though there are differences depending on altitude, how urban
the area is, and so on. The zones are based on average winter lows, so
you can figure your zone yourself if you notice the coldest winter
temperature from year to year:

zone 8 10-20 F
zone 9 20-30 F
zone 10 30-40 F

|Would appreciate pointers, books to read, and the like.

Jim Wilson, David Pane-Joyce, and I all have web pages devoted to
irises. If you have a web browser, you can find a lot of information
and references on our pages. We all link to each other's, so you
can start with any of us and move easily to the other two. My
web page address is at the bottom of this message.

Happy irising, Tom
