I do not wish to be immodest about LADY BIRD JOHNSON, but many old pros have
been after me to introduce for some time now. Dave Niswonger has asked me
everytime he saw the last couple of years: "When?" J.D. Stadler was the
first to see in among my seedlings and say he thought it was the best I have
come up with (I like SUKY! better). When Jim McWhirter (sure miss him!) saw
it at Portland as a seedling, he asked me if he could introduce it....and
since people in California can get increase about 5 or 6 times as fast as we
can back East, and since I liked Jim a lot...I said o.k. And I sent him
almost all my stock....which is why I would prefer people order it from
Stockton Gardens rather than from The Iris Pond (besides I never got in the
iris business for the money). The picture in the Bulletin is the most
accurate I have ever seen of an iris of mine. And since Mrs. Johnson, a
woman Suky and I admire greatly, had given me permission to name an iris in
her honor, I wanted it to be a really good one. Normally bud count is only7
or 8, and Iwould prefer more....but still there are a lot of irises
introduced that don't get 7 (not talking about arils and arilbreds). Anyway,
Tom, thanks for the nice words. By the way, it is pale wisteria blue in our
climate, but in hotter climes such as yours appears white with a violet
beard. Its breeding is LACED COTTON X BLUE ZIPPER. Next year one of its
children will be introduced: SWANN'S WAY...it is white with a violet beard!!
the goal I was working on with Lady Bird. But its not lacy like LBJ. Thanks
again, Clarence
