this is eastern us experience speaking, but around here (where its wet in the
air and ground a lot), mulch makes rot, shade and crowding inhibit bloom.
 too much fertilizer makes rot, especially nitrogen, but if you have very
coarse textured soil and a lot of rainfall, tall bearded may need added
fertilizer (but not much nitrogen).  around here, most tall beardeds seem to
prefer being grown in rows with a lot of cultivation.  some will do really
well as clumps, but most decline after a few years without division.  raised
beds and planting on a hill to get better air circulation help.
