Dustin, it doesn't take much encouragement to keep me whining about my
favorite topic - rot! clean cultivation (getting rid of all, every last bit)
of dead and diseased plant parts is supposed to be essential. burn them - do
not compost. i am wayyy to lazy for that approach. and i have also wondered
about affected roots - how do you get rid of them?
somewhere, i read that the more diverse microbial/invertebrate (bacteria,
fungi, and bugs) are in your garden, the less rots and plagues will tend to
become epidemic. makes sense - they apparently eat each other. so avoid
'sterile' growing conditions.
i have also heard of various clorox soaking regimes that is standard practice
for some gardeners, but don't know details. I joined AIS to learn more about
this very subject - the bulletins and catalogs are full of helpful ideas.
but this is more fun. Linda, at the rot capitol.
