Steve,
I absolutely agree with your advice to grow Siberians, Louisiana, Japanese,
etc. and lots of different species. One species that is wonderful, and
fairly trouble free is Iris setosa...and it comes in a wide variety of forms.
More iris breeders should be working on it since garden potential is
virtually unexploited. In Region 4 the rebloomers and beardless irises are
almost as popular as once blooming tall bearded irises. Reblooming tall
bearded (and medians) are great because as a group they are not at all rot
prone (I mean the cold weather rebloomers, not the other strain we usually
refer to as warm weather rebloomers. We have 2 fall shows here in Region 4,
and have been having them every year for more than a decade...usually Sept or
Oct. We also have several beardless iris shows (primarily Japanese) at such
places as Norfolk, Washington DC, Hendersonburg Va, Portsmouth, etc. We love
rebloomers and beardless irises in Region 4, and don't have to worry about
rot when we grow them! Clarence Mahan
