sue, steve, clarence, bob - i have really enjoyed this exchange about
inheritance. at the moment, it has absolutely no use in my daily life, but
it certainly is fascinating.
< Male-sterility is maternally and extranuclearly inherited
<in maize, as is the susceptibility t-cytoplasm confers for Southern
<Corn Leaf Blight.
steve - is the mechanism for maternal inheritance of corn blight understood?
would the same mechanism apply to iris?
also, in the pioneer corn seed example mentioned previously, would the
apparent lack of vigor transmitted to that batch of seed have been
heriditable (is that a word?)? or was the trait somehow only somatic (??)
< I have already mentioned that variegation
<has been shown to be a maternally transmitted trait. Only trust half
<of what you read in print or hear on the internt.
Bob - i missed your comment on variegation - is that of foliage or flower?
science is full of contradictions, otherwise it would be pretty boring. same
is true of print, internet and conversation!
