Yes, the mechanism is well understood, it's simple maternal
inheritance through the cytoplasm. C. S. Levings lab at NCSU came up
with how the susceptibility is coded in the chloroplast DNA, but I
don't remember details about it, that is whether the susceptibility
to corn blight is a result of the mechanism of male sterility in
T-cytoplasm, or whether they are just linked. I think they just found
the spot that coded for susceptibility.
This does not apply to iris, as iris are not susceptable to the
causal organism, Helminthosporium maidis.
The other example about the corn seed lot was strictly phenotypic,
and not inherited. Of course, those hybrids are made again as F1's
each year, anyway, so that lot was for feed corn production, anyway.
