This is really a side-note on the topic of maternal inheiritance ... Bob
Pries mentioned maternally inheirited variegation the other day, and I finally
had a chance to dig out a WWW URL with good information on variegation in
general for anyone who is interested (two URL's actually):
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/syllabi/clasnotes/201notes/chimeralec/chimer
as.html
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/tisscult/chimeras/chimera.html
Note that the first URL was too long to fit on one line and should be entered
as a single line with no spaces.
It's been a while since I read through this, and I don't recall much that will
shed light on our maternal inheiritance questions but it is very interesting
to anyone fascinated with variegation in plants. One author (Lineberger) is a
member of the Gesneriads mailing list, where variegation in African Violets
(Saintpaulia) is of course always a big topic.
I have made little progress turning up more information on the maternal
inheiritance question, although my wife did question a teaching colleague
who did some research time in the Plant Sciences department at our local
university. She (the colleague) seemed very matter of fact that yes, it
did matter which parent was pod or pollen, more in some species than others,
but was very vague on specifics. (The Orchid People, of course, have a
whole raft of reasons beyond the purely genetic as to why one plant should
be the pod parent rather than another.)
