Iris Study Group
Greetings ,Spring Is Inching In.
I just called the South Coast Botanical Gardens to see if they had a iris
study group. The lady on the other end of the line laughed and said " No
thats the only group we dont have up here." She went on to say ",why dont
you see about forming an iris group ?". So this is a sort of feeler to see if
there might be enough people out there who would like to form such a group.
The South Coast Botanical Gardens is south of metropolitan L.A. ,on Crenshaw
Bl., in the Palos Verdes Peninsula .This location would much closer than the
State & County Arboretum in Arcadia. I say much closer for most of L.A., Long
Beach ,West L.A. ,Torrance & Garden Grove .The Gardens are freeway close to
this part of town . For me it would be a trip of 10 mi. to South Coast as
compared to a 40 mi. trip to Arcadia. And Arcadia is not freeway close or
easy. As I look through the A.I.S. Bulletin I dont see an iris group that
would service this part of the sprawling L.A. basin . The only person I can
remember from those long ago meetings Is Thornton (sp) Abel. It was either he
or his wife that hybridized "Saffron Jewel". Does anyone know anything about
the family ? I have no other names of iris nuts in this part of the world,
so any names would certainly help . Having a local group to meet with would
sure be a pleasure. I know it must be quite a process to become a study group
affiliated with A.I.S., but at first I would want to see if there is enough
interest locally to even begin the process . I know that in the past there
was quite gang of folks who would drive 50 mi. to the iris meetings in
Arcadia.
My garden of native iris and Pacific Hyb. Is growing. I just added I.
longipetala ,I.inniminata,& .Canyon Snow".. Not sure but I think "Canyon
Snow " is a Pacific Hyb.
Enough for now . Let me know what you think About the study group.
