With regard to shipping irises to Sweden, I have had no difficulty at all. I
made a number of shipments of Siberian irises and species irises to Sweden in
the past few years and all that is required is a photosanitary certificate.
To obtain photosanitary certificate in Virginia, I can do one of two things.
I can call the State Agricultural Service and they will come to my garden
when we set time and date, where irises have been dug and cleaned ready for
inspection. Or I can call the Federal Plant Inspection people who work and
Dulles International Airport and set a time, and then take the irises over to
inspect at the airport. If you live near an international airport this
latter course is feasible. (Because the State Ag people know my operation
The Iris Pond very well, and inspect the garden once a year, we have
developed a process where I send them a list of the addresses and numbers
and types of irises to be sent to each in advance. This allows them to have
the certificates typed up in advance. I hope you find this helpful. Anyone
who wants to ship overseas, whether they sell irises or not, can follow these
procedures in VA. Other states may not be as accommodating, but I suspect
most agricultural states are. Clarence Mahan, proud to be a Virginian!
