kathy - i can do science, just can't grow iris.  so i can answer your
question - sand is nothing more complicated than ground up rocks.  rocks are
slowly dissolved by water (carbon dioxide from the air dissolved in water =
carbonic acid).  depending on what kind of ground up rock it is, the sand
will be acid, neutral, or alkaline.  limestone rocks make sand which is
alkaline and will raise the pH gradually, ground up quartz is neutral, and i
can't think right now what other kinds of rocks are like.....

so, you would just be trading big rocks for very very small rocks.

what kind of rocks is your sand made from?  pour some vinegar on some of your
sand - if it fizzes, that means the sand contains lime and is alkaline.
