doug - thanks for the info. the more i can learn about where they do well,
the more it will help me guess what will work here.
we have sedimentary geology here - either poorly drained acid clay soils from
shales and siltstones or well drained clay soils from limestone. (and small
areas of creek gravel like mine) - very little granitic or volcanic material
- except in soils on ancient terraces from pleistocene rivers. I know two
growers who garden on those kinds of granitic/volcanic ancient river terrace
soils and they have the best TBs that i know of around here. which is why i
was interested.
if they tolerate a 20 yr low of -7 F they ought to take an occasional dip
lower, especially with snow cover.
do you know what the humidity is like during their dry season? i can't
provide low humidity, but good air circulation will probably be really
important if they come from a non-humid habitat.
i have been looking at the photos in world of iris - these look really
gorgeous.
what about competition from weeds and companion plants? are they as fussy as
tb's or more tolerant like siberians (which can outgrow unmowed fescue sod
here).
