     It sounds like your climate is more variable than I would have thought.  
Here, our winter temperatures vary more than the summer temperatures.  For 
1999, the temperatures here ranged from -7 C [twice] to 43 C.
     Your Irises sound like what happened in Kentucky.  Some Irises such as 
LADY FRIEND were always dependable, while some would make a single bloom on a 
short stalk.
     Thinking of this, I have a short stalk of WINTERLAND that is about to 
open a single bloom.  It may would have done more, but it got froze a few 
times.
